Union Green receives state grant for park trails

Susquehanna Union Green has been awarded state funding to develop walking trails for Black Run Park.

Black Run Park was one of 117 new project approvals through the PA Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program. The program provides funding for projects involving the development, rehabilitation and improvement of public parks, recreation areas, greenways, trails, and river conservation.

“This funding will help Susquehanna Union Green fulfill its promise as an outdoor experience destination for our communities,” said State Rep. Justin Fleming, who helped to secure the award.

Black Run Park is a passive recreation space. Its 1,700 linear feet of walking trails and boardwalk are designed to interconnect seamlessly with the overall pedestrian infrastructure for which Union Green has been celebrated.

The beautiful backdrop for Black Run Park is its newly restored floodplain. Completed in 2022, the palustrine wetlands abound with flourishing native plant and animal life. It serves as a case study in environmental education for best practices in protecting and promoting an ecologically sensitive area.

“Not long ago, our area was designated as underserved and well below state averages when it comes to access to parks, trails, and outdoor recreation space,” said H. Ralph Vartan, Chief Executive Officer of Vartan Group, Inc., the project developer. “Thanks to projects like this and with the help of all our community development partners, that is quickly changing.”

In announcing the statewide funding awards, Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) Secretary Rick Siger stated, “these are projects that will enhance our community and economy while improving the quality of life for Pennsylvanians.”
